going somewhere

today i’m going somewhere.  i’m taking a covert vacation.  only the people who had to be told  were told.  no one knows.  not even me.  i guess i’m leaving today.  i didn’t do my laundry yet or pack.  don’t even know where my suitcase is.  don’t have a map, didn’t plan.

mail will pile up when i’m gone, have no one to clear it out.

didn’t make no reservations.

let me tell you, this is an odd thing to do.  especially in winter.  things ain’t pretty in winter.  i’m going to pennsylvania, but all of the leaves have fallen from the trees and the land looks like the sahara from a satelite.  the babbling streams are frozen, the trout are sleeping.

but i guess i’m gonna go.  gonna print out some questionable mapquest maps.  maybe i’ll drive past some homes for sale that i saw on the internet.  there’s one for $25,000, right by a glacial lake.  not a lakefront mind you, but it has lake rights.  i would prefer a lakefront but we’ll prolly drive by anyway.  we’ll feel all cold and bleak when we see it, and try to imagine it in warmer times.  imagination will fail, and hamlet and i will drive back down from the mountain in tears, probably.

but hey, that’s life.  if you just can’t wait to take a vacation when the weather is nice, then you’ll just have to cry about it in winter.

Response to “going somewhere”

emma

I drove through Pennsylvania in April once. It was kinda bleak.

I was in my art group last week and one of the women recalled a quote (not sure who said it):

Every journey has a secret destination that the traveller is unaware of.
